Today in class we finished finding Lewis and Clark journal entries that dealt with animals, plants, weather, Native Americans, and geology/geography. Each group shared their findings.

Animal discoveries
  • huge bison herds (followed by Native Americans)
  • grizzly bears (fierce, difficult to kill)
  • ate deer, turkey, and bison (among many other animals)

Plant discoveries

  • numerous trees (cottonwoods and a wide variety of pines)
  • rich, fertile soil along the Missouri river
  • grasslands

Weather

  • extreme weather
  • very cold, hail, storms, etc...

Native Americans

  • encountered dozens of Native American tribes (Missouri, Sioux, Mandan, Hidasta, Shoshone, Nex Perce, etc...)
  • Most encounters with NAtive Americans went well

Geology/Geography

  • There was no Northwest Passage (high and wide mountains)
  • Great Plains
