- huge bison herds (followed by Native Americans)
- grizzly bears (fierce, difficult to kill)
- ate deer, turkey, and bison (among many other animals)
Plant discoveries
- numerous trees (cottonwoods and a wide variety of pines)
- rich, fertile soil along the Missouri river
- grasslands
Weather
- extreme weather
- very cold, hail, storms, etc...
Native Americans
- encountered dozens of Native American tribes (Missouri, Sioux, Mandan, Hidasta, Shoshone, Nex Perce, etc...)
- Most encounters with NAtive Americans went well
Geology/Geography
- There was no Northwest Passage (high and wide mountains)
- Great Plains
