Monday, March 17

We took a quiz on what people thought was in the West prior to the Lewis and Clark journey. The following list was information about the West that was included in various books in Thomas Jefferson's library:

Wooly Mammoths roamed the West
Blue-eyed, Welsh speaking Indians lived in the West
There was an navigable water route connecting the Mississippi river and the Pacific ocean
There were unicorns, llamas, and 7 ft. tall beavers in the west
There were mountains of undissolved salt and many actively erupting volcanos

We also looked at various maps that were made prior to the Lewis and Clark expedition which showed very little information about the West. Some mas even showed California as an island!
Tomorrow we will be plotting locations on our map of the Louisiana Purchase
.
